Shauna’s Writing Journey
With 40 years of writing experience, my career has been a dynamic blend of creativity, innovation, and adaptability.
The 1980s: Foundations in Creativity
During college, I honed my skills at the University Union, crafting ads for the campus newspaper. This involved literal cut-and-paste techniques with clipart books and typewritten content, assembled into a cohesive layout.
My first professional role was at JC Penney’s corporate office, where I designed posters and clothing rack signage using a Varitype photo typesetter. This half-typewriter, half-photo processor was eventually upgraded to a dot-matrix printer, marking my first experience with evolving technology.
The 1990s: Embracing Digital Evolution
The advent of home and office computers revolutionized my work. At the San Antonio Symphony, I created monthly newsletters using Aldus Pagemaker, the forerunner to Adobe InDesign. This period was marked by a vibrant, creative environment as the Symphony flourished.
A pivotal career moment came at a church town meeting, where I advocated for a marketing professional role to support the church’s growth. Despite the unconventional idea, I was hired as the Communications Director. Over the next 20 years, I was integral to the church’s expansion from 800 to 8,000 members. I acted as Creative Director on three major capital campaigns and spearheaded digital innovations such as websites, blogs, social media, video streaming, and podcasts.
The 2010s: Agency Expertise
I transitioned to agency work, starting with SmithPrint in San Antonio, where I developed cross-media marketing campaigns and was a key team member in the thriving marketing division. Our success led to the acquisition of Toolbox Studios, a premier marketing agency. As a strategist, I created omni-channel campaigns for lead generation, B2B marketing, brand awareness, and sales, utilizing data-driven content for websites, landing pages, digital ads, social media, blogs, and press releases.
2019-Present: Freelance Freedom
Inspired to become my own boss, I embrace freelancing. I love the flexibility to work from anywhere, and experiment with new technologies. I continue to deliver high-quality content, press kits, website updates, and optimized SEO content. I’m fascinated by working as a Prompt Engineer with generative AI models, testing technology, analyzing responses, and ensuring accuracy.
